Max7219 Led Matrix Arduino

An 8 8 led matrix has 64 leds light emitting diodes which are arranged in the form of a matrix as 8 rows and 8 columns. Furthermore they can be chained together to control two or more units for even more leds. Sooner or later arduino enthusiasts and beginners alike will come across the max7219 ic. And for good reason it s a simple and somewhat inexpensive method of controlling 64 leds in either matrix or numeric display form.

Since these modules use the max7219 led driver chip we will be able to turn on and off the 64 leds of each modules using only 3 pins on our arduino. Using a led dot matrix in your next project can be a way to incorporate some cool little animations. You can read a very clear and detailed tutorial about this library at arduino playground. The second circuit in the arduino 8 8 led matrix interface series is based on bluetooth communication and android phone.

The code in this tutorial can be used for 8 8 8 32 and even larger displays. I have included a wiring diagram and many example codes. For that we are going to interface an 8 8 led matrix module with max7129 led driver with arduino uno board. In this project we have interface arduino with an android phone using bluetooth communication and the 8 8 led matrix connected to arduino through max7219 is controlled through a dedicated application on the android phone. I think the best option is to buy the dot matrix with the max7219 chip as a module it will simplify the wiring. Hence it is named as an led.

The nice thing about this library is that you can connect up to 8 matrixes together to build larger displays more about this in a future instructable.
